Dujiangyan City is well known for the world-famous Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project, and is reputed as the “Source of the Land of Abundance”. Located in the central section of Sichuan and northwestern edge of Chengdu Plain, Dujiangyan City stands in the watershed of the upper reaches and the middle reaches of Minjiang River. Lying between 30°44′-31°22′ North latitude and 103°25′-103°47′ East longitude, Dujiangyan is 48km away from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. Dujiangyan covers an area of 1,208 km2, with a population of 680,000, spanning 34km from east to west and 68km from north to south.
Located in the subtropical humid climate zone, Dujiangyan City has a favorable climate. There is no extremely hot weather in summer and no extremely cold weather in winter. The average annual temperature is 15.2℃, with 4.6℃ in January and 24.7℃ in July. The average annual rainfall is about 1200mm and the average annual frost-free period is about 280 days. The air quality and water quality always stay at the first level of national standard. The total forest coverage rate is 52.8% for the whole city and 40.4% for the urban area, which provides the upper reaches of Yangtze River with an important ecological barrier, named as the “Natural Oxygen Bar”. Due to the favorable ecological environment, the average life span of Dujiangyan people is 77.1, 5.7 years older than that of people in other cities in China, which makes the city “the Land of Longevity”.
Located in the natural transitional zone of Chengdu Plain and Northwestern plateau, Dujiangyan has a hypsography like a ladder, which is higher in northwest and lower in southeast, with mountains covering 60% of the total area, rivers 10% and lands 30% of the total area. The average altitude is 720m, with Guangguang Mountain in Hongkou about 4,582m as the highest place and Sandishui in Yanjiang County about 592m as the lowest place. Because of the favor of nature, Dujiangyan city is endowed with abundant natural resources. With the well preserved biological diversity, there are 3,012 higher plants and 11,000 animals including 35 national key protected animals such as Giant Panda and Golden Monkey and 46 endangered plants such as dove tree and Gingko. As the nearest forest away from megalopolis, the 360km2 virgin forest boasts the biggest azalea garden and moss garden in Asia.
Endowed with the rich tourism resources, long history, profound cultural deposits, unique charm and excellent residential environment, Dujiangyan has won the reputation of “Historical and Cultural City in China”, “China’s Top Tourist City”, “The Best Charming City”, “The Model of Habitat Environment Prize in China”， Dubai International Award for “Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment”, “National Grade AAAAA Tourist Attraction”，“The State-Level Key Scenic Area”, “The Patriotic Education Base”, “The State Protected Historic Site”, etc. Besides, Mt.Qingcheng and Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project in the city have been listed in succession as the “World Cultural Heritage” and “World Natural Heritage”.
